Why Top balancing?
There are slight differences in capacity, voltage, internal resistance and self-discharge rate between LiFePO4 cells even produced from the same batch.
And this difference will be amplified as the battery is used for a long period of time.
Barrel Effect Theory
The "Worst" cell determins the Best performance of the pack due to Barrel Effect Theory.To maximize the use and economics of the battery It requires the
high consistency of each cell,which leads to the price difference.
An active balancer is a solution to improve the consistency of cells when running in long time.
Active balancing and Passive balancing
Required equipment.
Adjustable DC power supply
1, Charging the single cells to 3.65V
2,Connect all battery cells in parallel,stay put 48 hours
3,Assemble the pack as you want
4,Discharge the pack to 2.5V
5,Disconnect the pack,charging each single cells with same current,same time(for ex,40A 3 hours)
6,Assemble the pack and check the voltage
Caution
Be sure to connect the correct polarity when connecting to the DC power supply.
Continuously observe the cell voltage and current during charging, if find any abnormal elevation, disconnect immediately.
Do not leave the battery cell during the charging phase from 3.50V to 3.65V.
Please turn off the system at night.
Top balancing is a long process and may last for several days or more than a week.
